Meet gabbah baya

The 2020 Level Ground residency cohort has officially started! (albeit a little later than expected and happening entirely in digital spaces right now due to COVID-19.)

Our residents are the heartbeat of Level Ground. Every year, our residents shape Level Ground’s future through their collaboration and partnership with us. They offer us new lenses to think about and explore the world and provoke our own sense of empathy through experimentation with new themes, mediums, and installation practices.

This week, we’re so excited to introduce you to gabbah baya (pronouns: they/them), and we hope you take some time to explore them and their work on Instagram @gabbahbaya! Check out their intro video above.

Describing their residency project, gabbah said, “In October 2019 I went to Palestine/Israel on an artist travel grant I received. I focused on a Village in the Israel-occupied side of Jerusalem, Ein Karem was a Palestinian town up until 1948 when it then became cleansed of Palestinians and occupied by Israelis, however, all the architecture and landmarks stayed the same, which is highly unusual. I 3D scanned buildings, landmarks, and other items in the village, and plan to implement the 3D scans in a multi-player, multi-level video game, and installation. I will be creating an environment with the use of physical space, virtual and augmented reality, and sound.”

As each of our residents continue developing their solo shows over the course of the year, you can stay up-to-date with their progress by following Level Ground on Facebook and Instagram, and by signing up for our email newsletter.
