New Issue, New Theme! SKEW 04: BLACK EMBODIMENT

Featuring poetry, visual art, essays, and more from Black artists across the diaspora, in the Level Ground Collective and beyond, SKEW is Level Ground's annual experimental art and dialogue magazine.

The FOURTH issue of SKEW Magazine is officially in the works, and we are overflowing with excitement to announce our new theme, SKEW 04: Black Embodiment!

This forthcoming issue will explore Black Embodiment in all its expansiveness.

The physical, spiritual, tangible, and ethereal expressions. The values, obstacles, dreams, and fantasies that govern how we engage the act of embodiment In this reality and those yet discovered.

In this period of human experience, with governing societies ever insisting their false vision of Blackness is truth, we ask in this issue, how do you SKEW in the creation of you?

Our powers of embodiment are undeniably strong. So authentic and radiant that they are endlessly co-opted then cursed in the same breath. Yet still we slay.

Tell us what showers of stardust, ancestors of the past, acrid wounds, and heights of elation mold your edges and curves.  What the echoes of your footsteps in living motion declare.

Show us where your light, laughter and swag originate.

What have you attempted to embody that was never truly yours, or released only to find yourself calling it back?

What currents flow through your body in the act of artistic creation? What ideas, images and imaginings are stirred up in thinking about the power of our bodies—queer bodies, bodies adorned, bodies of all sizes, bodies abled and disabled?

What does the embodiment of love feel like in your hands?

SKEW 04: Black Embodiment is a place to wonder at the glory of the lives and worlds we birth. To Illuminate the values that connect our hearts across the diaspora. To discover whether the essence of Black Embodiment has a taste, a song, a heartbeat.

To celebrate the precious vibration of us, in art form.

We are once again holding an open call for artist submissions to SKEW, and this year we’ve extended the timeline.

Submissions will open December 5th, 2022 and remain open until January 31st, 2023. That’s two months!

We’re also keeping good things going, and In alignment with the past two issues of SKEW, this issue will be cooperatively owned by the curators, designer, and artists that bring it to life. This means 100% of SKEW proceeds will go directly to supporting and sustaining Black artists!

It is an honor to be in the fourth year of publishing this dynamic indie magazine, amplifying the work of Black, LGBTQ+ artists and we are already so eager to see it in your hands.

Be sure to follow us on Instagram at @skewmag , and head back here for all the information when submissions open on December 5th.
