The (She.LL)

Part of our 2021-22 Residency Program, The (She.LL) by TOMMi is dynamic space she created using virtual reality, paintings, sculptures and video to examine the expansiveness of our concept of Self. The show opened on Friday, October 14, 2022 at Sovern and ran through October 21.

Artist Statement: "I live by the mantra that I am enough and have everything I need to get to where I want to be. All that I embody, the tribe that I find support in, the challenges I face, and the things that make up the beauty of my identity are within my (She.LL). In showing the power of identity as a Black Queer Woman, my work exemplifies the power of Black self-image and the celebration of how we use our creative forms of expression, which extend beyond our oppression and can't be controlled. Key expressions in my art include multimedia installations and acrylic paintings with exploration in optical illusions, circuitry, and immersive technology art experiences. I incorporate contrasting themes showing harmony within them such as technology and nature, movement and stillness, and feminine and masculine energy to echo the notion that our story as Black people exhibits the multi-facets of us as a people." - TOMMi
