SKEW+A with Jarell Wilson

The SKEW team has been working hard to get our first issue ready to go by Monday, March 5, so in the mean time, we wanted to give you a chance to learn more about each of us. Keep reading–you just might discover your new pop culture obsession, or your new favorite writer.

WRITER / overwatch champion

Jarell Wilson

Location: Austin, Texas

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about fighting injustice in whatever form it presents itself. My goal is to become the Speaker of the House and guarantee a single-payer option, end the Patriot Act, and make DC a state.

So what excites you about writing for SKEW?
Normally I talk about pop culture’s deeper meanings to my dog. Now, with SKEW, I can throw it in the faces of strangers, and unlike my dog, they won’t fart in response.

What pop culture do you follow? What are some of your favorite books? Music? Sports? Video games?
My favorite book is The Color Purple. In terms of music, I love Beyoncé, Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Chance the Rapper, SZA, and H.E.R. I cheer for Baylor University and against the Patriots, but in general I cheer for Texas teams (minus the Cowboys and Texas A&M). And as far as video games go, I'm a boss Symmetra in Overwatch.

OK, so what celebrities would you invite to a dinner party?
Beyoncé, Solange, Michelle Obama, Thom Yorke, Rihanna, Alex Shibutani, HRH Prince Harry of Wales and Meghan Markle.

Can you tell us how you describe your spirituality?
I’m a Jesus follower committed to making other Jesus followers less awful.

Your current Netflix binge?
Always Parks & Rec, like on repeat.

Pop culture guilty pleasure?
Pretending to enjoy Broadway as much as other queers.

Who inspires you?
Beyoncé, the hardest working woman in Hollywood.
