Sometimes Soft, Sometimes Solid

Part of our 2020-2021 Residency Program, Sometimes Soft, Sometimes Solid by Coffee Kang is an imaginative space she created using soap to examine the fragility of our concept of home. The show opened on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at LAUNCH LA and ran through August 8.

Artist Statement: “Sometimes Soft, Sometimes Solid” evokes a reimagination of homes and bodies in transit, constructed by soap modular units. The soap medium invokes intimate memories and interior life, while its nature of temporality and fragility suggests the impermanence of what makes up a “house” and the relationship between bodies and their surroundings. With artist’s transnational narratives embedded, the artistic approach of modular construction links to a flexible, temporary, contingent, and shifting inhabiting experience. The installation calls for a sensational and relational viewing experience while investigating the vulnerability and ambivalence within homes, physically and emotionally, under constant natural and cultural turbulence. –Coffee Kang
