In nothing exists separate, 2018 artist-in-residence Rebekah Mei captures the nine archetypes of the Enneagram in nine different mediums, the results of a months-long experiment in attempting to experience the world through the eyes of each type.
About the Show
nothing exists separate represents the nine archetypes of the Enneagram with a nine-piece visual art gallery by 2018 artist-in-residence Rebekah Mei, which debuted at Innerspace Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles on November 3, 2018 as part of the 2018 Level Ground Festival. Born out of a kind of performance art that involved living within the confines of each type, each of the nine pieces has a unique focus and is created in a different medium. Through the written and visual parts of this show, viewers are prompted to do the delicate work of looking into the blind spots of their own personality while gaining small insights into the experience of the other, whoever they may be.
The show also included a bar, live DJ, dialogue with a psychologist, spoken word poetry, and an interactive 64-page zine guiding participants through the visual art.
The Creative Team
Rebekah Mei, creator and 2018 Level Ground artist-in-residence
Rebekah Mei (she/her) is an artist, educator, and human being. Her personal work is inspired by a deep fascination with the individuality found in our vast humanity. A love of sharing the wisdom of artists, movements, and messy hands drives her passion to teach others of all ages and abilities. Rebekah is an Enneagram 9, Scorpio Sun and Taurus Moon, ESFP, and bisexual.
Preferring to choose a medium based on the concept of the work, Rebekah’s art-making practice is inter-disciplinary and mixed media. While she’s comfortable working with clay, fabric, wood, wire, paints or photos, her current medium of choice is printmaking, as this lends itself to conveying and multiplying activist messages. If you need a print or a sign for a protest, grab some cardboard and give her a call.
For the past 10 years Rebekah has worked as an art educator, facilitating workshops in partnership with various local non-profits, including the Pasadena Education Foundation and the former Pasadena Museum of California Art.
Raised in China, Hong Kong, and Thailand, Rebekah has found her home in Los Angeles, on land that was historically cared for by the Tongva people. In the summer of 2019 Rebekah pushed a small human out of her body. She spends much of her time feeding and cleaning that human. Rebekah is also a certified Massage Therapist, and is currently the Coordinator for the Level Ground Artist Collective.
