On our SKEW team, I’m the lone parent in the bunch, but with six children, I have enough kids for all of us, right? As a parent, I know all of us are hungry for resources, especially if you’re like me and didn’t talk about these topics with your parents when you were a kid. It’s not just parents, either; if you’re a teacher, grandparent, older sibling, or neighbor, these are questions worth considering. Every month, I choose a topic and offer a handful of suggested resources, sometimes based on the calendar and sometimes chosen for some other reason. We’re all in process. I’m learning along with you, and none of us are experts. So let’s figure this out together, for the sake of the generation.
Lately, I have all the words and no words at all.
How can we begin to describe what is happening with immigration in this country? I’ve written emails and made phone calls and signed statements and donated to worthy organizations. I’ve sat in silence, overwhelmed by the enormity of the world’s events yet comprehending only a sliver of the injustice. And then I look around my dinner table, at my kids, and I long for words to make sense of it all.
As we adults lament and act, children are watching. They need to know and talk about this too, at levels appropriate for their ages. In this edition of Raising Kids Who Aren’t Assholes, I recommend 11 stories of immigration – most featuring refugees – for children. Perhaps some adults should read them too.
